NordVPN Review

NordVPN is a fairly new VPN provider. In fact, you may not have heard of it yet. We suggest taking more than a passing glance at this new kid on the block. The VPN client made its debut in 2012, and thousands of users have subscribed to the service since.

Terfincom co S.A. is the driving force of NordVPN and is based in Panama. Although the software is new, the company that makes it has years of experience in servers and hosting solutions. The experience behind the VPN client should give you confidence; you will get the service and protection that you deserve.

Even though NordVPN is a basic, straightforward service, we believe that this only means there is room to grow. While most VPN service providers list prices in U.S. dollars, this service provider charges in Euros. This means that if you are outside of the European Union, you will have to check current exchange rates to determine the cost of a subscription.

 Pricing Tiers

NordVPN offers just one package, similar to other service providers. You can save money by subscribing to more than one month at a time. Here are the rough conversions:

  • 30 Days – $10 per month
  • 90 Days – $20 every three months
  • 6 Months – $38 twice each year
  • 1 Year – $60 annually

Regardless of the fact that NordVPN charges in Euros, it is a bit higher priced than average providers. At this time, the features of the VPN client are not up to par for the price paid. That said, the cost of the subscription, although high, is well worth the amount of security delivered. We are confident that, as the client grows, the features offered will catch up to the cost of a subscription.

When you choose to utilize NordVPN, you are provided with unlimited bandwidth, PPTP, L2TP, OpenVPN, Proxy, high levels of data encryption, and servers in more than a dozen countries. Because the company is based in Panama, it is not required to track or log the activities of its subscribers. This means that you can browse the Internet without worry.

IP addresses assigned to customers are dynamic by default. You may choose to access static IP addresses. You can also connect to your VPN client on two devices at the same time.

Customer Support

If you need to contact customer support, you can do so through email or Live Chat. Before you contact customer service, take a look at the tutorials, FAQ, and knowledge base located on the website. All are helpful and may aid you in fixing issues without the need for support.

Privacy and Security

If there is an area where NordVPN shines, it is security. While the levels of encryption are dependent upon the protocol you select, you are given access to 128-bit, 256-bit L2TP, and 256-bit AES encryption. That doesn’t mean anything to you? Consider, then, that the U.S. government trusts AES encryption.

As has been said, being based in Panama means that NordVPN is not forced to track your activity. This means that anything you do online is completely private. For additional security, pay for your subscription using the anonymous payment method Bitcoin.

The NordVPN Website

The NordVPN website has clearly been designed by professionals. The layout is crisp and clean, and any information that you need is easy to locate. We appreciate that the privacy policy is transparent.

 Signing Up

We found the signup process for NordVPN to be a breeze. We created a username and provided an email address; that was it. With these two pieces of information, we were able to begin setting up the VPN client.

We clicked on the activation link in our email, downloaded the zip file from the website, and installed the software. We were disappointed that we were not given DNS leak protection, one-click port forwarding, or an Internet kill switch. We hope that NordVPN will be adding these features in the future.

Supported Platforms

You can download the software for Windows, Linux and Mac. PPTP and L2TP are supported for iOS and Android. Be sure to check out the website for help in installing the software correctly on your specific device.

What we like about NordVPN:

  • Professional website
  • 236-bit AES OpenVPN encryption
  • Plenty of room to grow
  • Bitcoin acceptance
  • No tracking or logging of user activity

What we don’t like about NordVPN:

  • Cost of subscription higher than average
  • Extra features are not available
  • No more than two simultaneous connections
  • Software can be buggy

Overall, we believe that NordVPN offers a high level of security that is worth the cost of a subscription. Even though we would like to see some of the same features offered by other service providers, we are happy to pay for a subscription and wait for the software to improve. The high level of security is enough to make us overlook the missing features. We are confident in recommending NordVPN to any consumer who desires true privacy and security on the Internet.
