Kepard is a small VPN company that gives users a basic service for a basic price. The company utilizes custom software that makes it stand out from the rest of the VPN providers on today’s market. Windows and Android users are happy with the excellent product and service. Mac and iOS users are less than thrilled with the lack of features available for these platforms.
The company is one of the only on the market to offer a half-hour-per-day free trial. This isn’t outstanding once you know that Kepard also offers a 15 day free trial. You’ll find it tough to discover more information about this free trial; Kepard is fairly tight lipped about the offering.
After installing and testing the software, we have determined that it is most useful for the basic Internet user. If you are looking for a VPN that will support gaming habits or the downloading of torrents, there are others that will serve you better. If, on the other hand, you simply want to use the Internet in a secure way, Kepard is as good as they come.
Kepard, like other VPN service providers, offers a single package. The price for this plan is $7 per month or, if you want to save money, $35 for a year. Announced clearly on the website is a trial of 30 minutes per day. After you subscribe, you are given access to a 15-day trial period.
With your subscription, you get VPN servers in Canada, US, Canada, UK, Germany, and the Netherlands. You connect using L2TP, PPTP, or OpenVPN protocol. You are given unlimited bandwidth, no caps on data usage, and you can connect two devices at the same time.
You can utilize P2P torrents if you are connected to a server in the Netherlands. Torrents are not permitted on any server in another country.
The only availability you have to customer support is through an email ticket system. While this type of support is very basic, it is also very efficient. After we sent a query via the ticket system, we received a reply in a matter of minutes.
Privacy and Security
While other VPN service providers do not keep logs, Kepard does keep them, and they keep them for three days. The logs record your session start time, session finish time, email address, and your IP address. The good news is that this information is only kept for only three days and then destroyed.
The default encryption level is 128-bit OpenVPN. The service does offer encryption levels of up to 265-bits, but this must be adjusted by the user. While we would like to see this higher level of encryption as standard, the fact that it is available is a positive for Kepard.
The Kepard Website
The website itself is pleasing on the eyes and easy to navigate. There is not much in the way of information, but the software is fairly basic. We don’t find the lack of information to be an obstacle. The website is easy to navigate and the FAQ is easy to understand. There is a blog on the site, but it is only updated every few months.
Getting started with Kepard is easy. We signed up for the free 30 minutes, downloaded and installed the client. We registered with an email address and password. As soon as we registered, we were told that we were being given a free 15 day trial of the Premium software.
Once installed, the VPN client is easy to use. Changing server locations is as easy as ticking a box. The same can be said for choosing the desired protocol. When given the choice of choosing between TCP and UDP, we suggest going with TCP. UDP is faster, but it is also less reliable.
Kepard has a dedicated client for Windows and Android. There are instructions available for configuring Windows, OSX, and Linux. You can also set up Android with PPTP and L2TP/IPSec.
What we like about Kepard:
- 15 day free trial
- No speed restrictions
- Unlimited bandwidth
- Great Android app
- Ease of use
- Choice of server location
- Choice of UDP and TCP OpenVPN
What we don’t like about Kepard:
- Logs are kept (only for three days)
- Level of encryption could be higher
- Lengthy registration form
We are happy to recommend Kepard to anyone wishing to use the Internet in a private and secure way. While the client is nothing spectacular, it does what it says it will at a fair price. There is a smooth consistency between the phone and desktop interfaces that we appreciate. With a 15 day free trial, there is little reason to not at least give Kepard a try.
